THE
DREAM
I NEVER HAD
THE ACCIDENTAL WRITER?
The children were growing. It was almost time to start school. Have I done enough to prepare them? Are they ready? Will they know what the teacher is saying? Will they even understand? My babies! They are only young!! It’s a whole new world out there! I won’t be there to explain things. I was anxious. I just wanted to help. I started putting pictures- A for apple, B for ball… on papers, to help along with their reading. I was very diligent. I worked day and night. I wanted my children to learn and know words. I wanted them to do well at school. I began making stories up about the pictures. Before I knew it, I had many stories. My children loved the stories- Grandma Hanna… The little boy called Ben… What Cherish likes… Enoch Had a big-day surprise!… We spread them out on the floor, one script attached to the other with tapes. Printed pictures from google featured on pages, brought the words out to life. Time to time, we lay down on the floor, sharing a story, having a laugh. It was fun. We asked questions. We did voices. We imitated characters. We read out words. We pointed out words. We took turns to read. It became a feature thing in our home, to read the scripts out loud!
Then our children began school and did very well indeed! Now that they are older, what to do with all these stories? We had enjoyed them, perhaps others could too? This was how the books were published. Even though I had parents who were quite artistic, I was an accidental writer. But again, at the back of my mind, at times I wondered- ‘Am I really?’
He said his words like they were stories. He was very good with them. He was kind of poetic. His voice and his well-crafted recitations were like music to my ears. The smell of stationery filled the air. I would sit quietly, playing with whatever I could find as a toy in his office; Paper clips, colored pens, pencils, papers that I’d cut into pieces to craft things, and such.
My father loved telling folktales to his kids when we were small, and he loved singing. My mother loved singing too. My father was a principal, the head of a local secondary school, who also illustrated artworks for sports and conventional causes. He loved fine arts, he loved using colors.
My mother was also a local school teacher, creative with everything she touched- From food innovations to fashion ensembles and accessories, I seem to recall. But her topmost was in her creative teaching methods for her students, who all sang her praises, some of whom I got to know.
Creatively, my hands have always been good- Home decors and arrangements, color mixings, improvisations, and sort. But nothing that I ever gave second thoughts to, in attribution. I have also asked myself- ‘Perhaps my ways with words as a writer were influenced by my many days of watching my father slowly pace up and down his office, pausing between moments, only to quietly gaze far out in thoughts, into the openness of the woods surrounding his office-The young, tall mahogany trees, their tender leaves in breeze, swaying at heights in the middle of the afternoon- My father, building his thoughts, reciting his speech, as he prepared for his day at the head of schools’ associate meetings?
He used big words, most of which I didn’t understand. But I remember as I played, no matter what I wanted to say, I never wanted to interfere with his flow.
If I had caught any of these in my ‘baby days’, my younger years, I never knew it. As I grew, and into an adult, I had plans for many things, but ‘Writing’ was never one of them. It was a dream I never had. But today, I am here, sitting down as the author of Sue’s Storytime Delights, and more.
